Uni is officially back and you know what that means, right? Early nights*, early mornings** and hours in the library.***
Lol. JK:
*late nights
**erm, mornings? Is that English?
***hours of quality boozing (who says £6.99 vodka can’t taste good, amirite?)
Don’t worry, we’ve got your backs. Did you know that the ancient Egyptians used to cure their freshers’ week hangovers by listening to sick bands in Nottingham? Okay, not really. But, we’ve sorted the top three gigs this week just for you, so you can sit back and enjoy the ride.
MONDAY
First up this week is Trentfest at the NTU City Campus SU bar (all are welcome, not just Trent students). They’ve got a banging selection of bands and singers that are bringing the festival vibe to get you in the party mood, along with themed drinks and even face painting if that’s what you’re into. First up is MOTORMOUF, who mixes beatboxing, rap and singing through a loop machine to make a unique sound unlike anything you’ve heard before. Definitely worth checking out.
THE FLAVELLS’ frontman and all round Clifton boy BILLY KENNEDY is making an appearance. Think amped up guitars tearing it up in your local boozer and probs offending your nan.
JAKE BURNS will be there with chilled vocals and an acoustic guitar. There’s a strong chance you’ll meet the love of your life listening to JAKE BURNS’ ‘Stay Close to Me’, so, y’know, bring your A-game (and invite us to the wedding).
B3AR are also gonna be there with what they call ‘Indie Trap’. They make some really atmospheric tunes and are ones to watch on the local scene. Miles Smith’s voice = <3.
After all that musical romance, you’re gonna need something to get you HYPEDDD for the rest of the night. Enter ELMZ, who makes hip hop tunes that will get you bouncing (I’m actually bouncing as I type. Real talk). Check out his newest tune, ‘Sound Like This’, here.
Nottingham Trent Student Union

Doors: 12pm

WEDNESDAY
Next, we’re going up the road to The Maze for some of the best guitar music going in Notts atm. TALKING TO FRANK are headlining, a trio which, in their own words, take influences from 60’s Britpop and current alternative. The result is some seriously good tracks that will have you humming along even if you don’t know the words.
SUPER FURNITURE fans will be pleased to hear that the group will be doing what they do best, i.e. smashing the guitar riffs and melting a few hearts in the process. CAUTION: you might (probably will) end up headbanging to these guys so, y’know, might wanna get your neck prep in order #doyouevenlift?
SCOTT BUGG & THE VITAL FEW remind us a bit of all of those 90s alternative rock songs you’d hear on films like ‘10 Things I Hate About You’. That, by the way, is a huge compliment. 10 Things I Hate About You is brilliant. The band, besides a really long name, have got really catchy, genre-crossing music. Give ‘em a listen!
The Maze
Wednesday 27th September
Doors: 7:30pm
Entry: £3
SATURDAY
Last up this week are BONE CULT at Spanky’s. BONE CULT… where even to start with these two? Think metal and electronica (or ‘death electronica’) and some pretty creepy (but cool) masks, which adds to their overall vibe. The energy at their live shows gets everyone in the room headbanging, moshing, jumping up and down. You name it. The two are basically bonkers and their show will no doubt be one to remember.
Not only that, Nottingham’s ‘premier bearded drag queen’, NANA, will be playing both a live set and performing a drag show later during the night (how cool does this night sound?!). Her music is a toughie to describe. It basically reminds us of a forest rave – dark, edgy and a bit out there. Go and check it out and tell us what you think!
Also performing are Anatomy from Leicester.
Spanky Van Dykes
