What is it about Nottingham musicians and animals? If the RSPCA ever find out I fear the current upward momentum in our scene could be squashed super quick. First DOG IS DEAD and now INJURED BIRDS, personally in both cases the music soothes the angst of the name, not sure if the RSPCA will buy that!

Inspired by intense evangelising that would make the most hard core American Preacher proud (from their label Denizen Recordings) this was our first time catching IB live, we’re converted Father. Lead singer Sam is impossible not to love, warm, fun and emotive with a diverse array of musical sounds and lyrical subject matter in his armory, nicely served up by the Spanky Van Dykes sound system. Kneel down and thank the Lord for bringing INJURED BIRDS into the life of your ear drums.

Next up at this Framework Raise The Roof gig were OLDBOY, quite a musical handbrake from IB. Tight, powerful even slightly menacing at times thanks to a fearsome rhythm section OLDBOY showed why they are one of Nottingham’s most talked about IndieRock bands at this moment, and baring in mind how highly regarded the Notts scene currently is that’s a damn fine place to be.

Another musical handbrake (charity gigs are often thus) brings us to THE EVILTONES, the Nottingham band who are MASSIVE in… Portugal! Seriously their tour there next month is already selling out Spanky sized venues. You can see why, their energy and talent shining through despite the best efforts of dodgy microphones to ruin things. THE EVILTONES pushed on truimphantly led by the fierce Ian Curtis-Esque dance moves of lead singer Jimmy, ladies of Portugal…. watch out!
