Not quite Comrades but two Nottingham artists have got very close this month, so close that it brings up the subject of what counts as signing to a major label? Well for us, and these are the criteria by which we count NATALIE DUNCAN, SHIDE BOSS, DOG IS DEAD and JAKE BUGG as having ‘crossed the finishing line’, it means:
– One of the accepted major labels e.g Universal, Sony BMG, Warner and EMI.
– An album deal.
– A genuine signing to their rosta rather than the artist hiring them for distribution or something similar.
For a moment we thought a fifth Nottingham act of the year had signed to a major record label, not quite, more like the fourth and a half as it were. Up and coming Notts star, previous Future Session artist and Future Sound of Nottingham finalist SKIMAN has signed his first ‘feature deal’ with Sony. This means they have asked him to officially guest on another one of their artists tracks, it’s a bit like been asked for an official trial with Man Utd (sorry Forest or County!).
SKIMAN said, “Really happy about the news yet still keeping my feet firmly on the ground with everything. There’s a long way to go yet before anything really comes together the way we are planning.”
Sounding quite like a Premiership footballer in the process.
Also making moves is LEE GOUGH who the Nottingham Post report has signed a one single deal with Island/ Dej Jam in the states, if Lee gets back to us we’ll let you know more, for now check him out with Zoe Kirk from the Post in the latest This Is Live vid.
So neither artist has landed the big money deal yet. If sleeping with someone is the metaphorical equiv of actually signing an album deal with a major then this is the equivalent to a first date that’s gone really well and been followed by some pretty passionate snogging on the front porch before her angry Dad appears and tells ya to sling ya hook.
It’s great seeing more Nottingham talent taking major steps towards realising their musical dreams as well another injection of momentum into our vibrant New Music scene, we can’t even begin to imagine how massive 2012 is going to be, it’s shaping up to be absolutely huge!
If you don’t believe us, believe The Guardian.
